Mundo Novo

Mundo Novo is Brazil's workhorse aristocrat: a naturally occurring Typica–Bourbon cross found near the town of the same name and released by Campinas's IAC institute in the 1950s. It combined Bourbon-class cup quality with vigor and yields that transformed Brazilian productivity.

Tall and robust, it thrives across Brazil's plateaus and remains — alongside its dwarf descendant Catuaí — the backbone of the country's Arabica. In the cup it delivers the classic Brazilian register: chocolate, nuts, and heavy sweetness with mild acidity, the base flavor of espresso blends worldwide.

Where Mundo Novo is grown

Mundo Novo — frequently asked questions

Why is Mundo Novo so important to Brazil?

Its combination of strong yields, drought tolerance, and reliable sweet cup made large-scale quality coffee economically viable on Brazil's plateaus; with Catuaí it still dominates Brazilian Arabica plantings.

Is Mundo Novo a hybrid?

It is a natural cross between Typica and Bourbon lineages — spontaneous rather than bred — later selected and released by the IAC research institute.

What does Mundo Novo taste like?

The archetypal Brazil profile: chocolate and nut sweetness, full body, low-to-moderate acidity — the foundation flavor of countless espresso blends.
