Ruiru 11

Ruiru 11 is Kenya's answer to its two great scourges — coffee berry disease and leaf rust. Bred at the Coffee Research Station at Ruiru as a composite hybrid (Catimor-type resistance crossed with quality parents including SL28), it lets farmers produce without the heavy fungicide programs SL varieties demand.

Its compact frame doubles planting density, and while early releases cupped clearly below the SLs, continued selection narrowed the gap — modern Ruiru 11 from good factories participates in Kenya's top lots, and its economics keep it central to smallholder replanting.

Where Ruiru 11 is grown

Ruiru 11 — frequently asked questions

Does Ruiru 11 cup as well as SL28?

The best modern Ruiru 11, grown high and processed at top factories, comes close — and blends of SL and Ruiru cherry are common in cooperative lots. SL28 retains the edge in intensity; Ruiru wins decisively on disease economics.

Why did Kenya breed Ruiru 11?

Coffee berry disease can destroy half a crop in wet years, and fungicide programs are costly. Ruiru 11's resistance made reliable production possible for smallholders who couldn't afford intensive spraying.

What is Batian's relationship to Ruiru 11?

Batian (2010) is its taller successor from the same program — selected for the same resistances with a cup profile closer to the SL standard.
