Sidamo (Sidama) Coffee

Sidama — long spelled Sidamo in the trade — is the broad highland region south of Lake Awassa from which Yirgacheffe itself was once a sub-zone. It remains Ethiopia's volume specialty engine: hundreds of washing stations processing heirloom cherry from garden farms across Bensa, Bura, Arbegona, and other districts.

The region's size means real diversity: high-altitude Bensa lots can rival Yirgacheffe's complexity, while classic Sidama profiles offer rounder, stone-fruit sweetness that anchors countless Ethiopian single-origin offerings and blends worldwide.

Sidamo (Sidama) — frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Sidamo and Yirgacheffe?

Yirgacheffe is a smaller zone within the greater Sidama highlands with a more sharply floral, citrus profile. Sidama coffees are typically rounder and fruit-sweet. Both grow heirloom varieties at high altitude with washed and natural processing.

Why do labels say both Sidamo and Sidama?

Sidamo is the historical trade name; Sidama is the correct name of the people and, since 2020, their federal region. The specialty trade increasingly uses Sidama.
