Yirgacheffe Coffee

Yirgacheffe, in Ethiopia's Gedeo Zone, is arguably the most famous single coffee name on earth. Its combination of extreme altitude, indigenous heirloom varieties, and dense smallholder garden farming produces washed coffees so distinctive that 'Yirgacheffe' became shorthand for the floral, citrus-driven style specialty coffee celebrates.

Thousands of farming families deliver cherry to cooperative washing stations — Idido, Chelelektu, Konga among the renowned names — where wet processing over 36–72 hour fermentations develops the region's signature clarity. Natural-processed Yirgacheffe, dried on raised beds, trades some of that clarity for blueberry and tropical fruit intensity.

Yirgacheffe — frequently asked questions

What makes Yirgacheffe taste floral?

A convergence of factors: indigenous heirloom varieties with wild genetic diversity, very high altitude slowing cherry maturation, and meticulous washed processing at cooperative stations. No other origin reliably reproduces the jasmine-bergamot profile.

Is Yirgacheffe Arabica or Robusta?

Entirely Arabica — mostly uncatalogued heirloom landrace varieties unique to the Gedeo highlands, often labeled simply 'Ethiopian heirloom.'

Volcana Coffee grows and exports specialty Arabica and Fine Robusta from our own region — the Bolaven Plateau in Laos — with SGS-inspected quality and full export documentation. Taste how our volcanic terroir compares.
