Haraz Mountains Coffee

In the Haraz massif west of Sana'a, coffee grows on hand-built stone terraces as it has for five centuries — the world's oldest continuous coffee agriculture, at altitudes and aridity that should make cultivation impossible. Ancient landrace varieties (Udaini, Dawairi, Tuffahi) survive nowhere else.

Farmers dry whole cherries on rooftops, and the husks themselves become qishr, Yemen's traditional drink. The resulting naturals — raisined, winey, spiced — carry the flavor legacy that the port of Mokha gave to the world, now traded at premium prices amid the challenges of reaching market.

Haraz Mountains — frequently asked questions

Why is Yemeni coffee so expensive?

Minuscule yields from ancient terraces, painstaking rooftop drying, and difficult export logistics — combined with unique landrace genetics collectors and roasters compete for.

What does 'mocha' actually mean?

Al-Mokha was the Red Sea port that shipped Yemen's coffee to the world in the 1600s; the chocolate association came later, from the cup's cocoa-like richness.
