Uganda · Coffee Growing Region
Mount Elgon (Bugisu) Coffee
On the vast shield of Mount Elgon along the Kenyan border, Bagisu smallholders grow Uganda's premier Arabica at altitudes reaching 2,200 m. The historic 'Bugisu' trade name still signals the region's washed coffee, produced from SL-lineage and Nyasaland trees often older than their farmers.
A new generation of washing stations and farmer organizations has sharpened the traditionally home-processed coffee into clean, berry-toned lots, positioning Elgon as East Africa's best-value high-altitude origin while naturals add a fruit-bomb sideline.
