West Valley Coffee
The West Valley (Valle Occidental) rivals Tarrazú at the top of Costa Rican coffee: its hillside towns gave the country the Villa Sarchí variety (a local Bourbon mutation) and an outsized share of its Cup of Excellence victories, driven by an intense micro-mill culture.
Slightly warmer and drier than Tarrazú, the valley excels in honey and natural processing, and its producer families — many in their fourth or fifth generation — operate some of the most technically sophisticated small mills in the coffee world.
