Matas de Minas Coffee

Matas de Minas occupies the warm, humid Atlantic-forest hills of eastern Minas Gerais — steep family farms averaging under ten hectares, where hand-picking survives because machines can't work the slopes. Long dismissed as a volume zone, it has emerged as one of Brazil's most exciting specialty frontiers.

The warmer forest climate ripens fruit-toned, honeyed cups, and a young generation of producers experimenting with careful naturals, honeys, and fermentations now sends Matas lots deep into Cup of Excellence rankings, often at prices the famous regions can no longer offer.

Matas de Minas — frequently asked questions

How is Matas de Minas different from other Brazilian regions?

Steep, hand-picked Atlantic-forest terrain and a warmer, more humid climate — yielding fruitier, brighter cups than the mechanized plateau regions, from much smaller farms.

Is Matas de Minas good value?

Yes — quality has risen faster than the region's name recognition, so comparable cups often price below Cerrado or Mantiqueira equivalents.
