Machakos & Eastern Kenya Coffee
East of Nairobi, the Kamba highlands of Machakos and neighboring Makueni farm SL-variety coffee on drier hills outside the Mount Kenya limelight. Cooperative factories here follow the same double-washed discipline as the famous counties at friendlier auction prices.
The drier climate concentrates sweetness in the surviving cherry, and well-run factories — several rejuvenated by direct-trade relationships — deliver classic Kenyan blackcurrant character that buyers repeatedly rate above the region's market reputation.

Machakos & Eastern Kenya — frequently asked questions
How does Machakos differ from Nyeri?
Drier, slightly lower hills give a softer frame around the same SL genetics and washed process — classic Kenyan fruit at gentler intensity and better value.
Is Eastern Kenya coffee reliable?
Factory-dependent, as everywhere in Kenya — but its best cooperatives now match central counties' quality standards, and the price gap makes them favorite value discoveries.
